History

RefugeeWorks was created in 1997 as a program of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), one of the eleven national voluntary agencies responsible for resettling refugees in the United States each year. The same year, the U.S. Office of Refugee Resettlement selected RefugeeWorks as the government’s principle training and technical assistance provider for employment and self-sufficiency.For the past 15 years, RefugeeWorks has provided resettled refugees with training and technical assistance on employment. In 2012, RefugeeWorks changed its name to Higher and expanded its services to corporations looking for workforce solutions that capitalize on the diversity and reliability of new American populations . With solid expertise and a network of over 300 local organizations, Higher is uniquely suited to offer creative and flexible staffing from a proven pool of diverse, adaptable, and dependable workers.

As a program of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Higher benefits from administrative support and an internal connection to one of the nation’s largest resettlement agencies. These advantages facilitate our provision of technical assistance, training, and staffing solutions to employers and service providers across the country.
